No diapers! Elimination Communication?

Before Elizabeth was born I was all for cloth diapering. I was totally onboard with it and even had a baby shower where generous people gave me cloth diapers. I was thrilled but at the same time frightened. After Elizabeth was born we moved out of our house and disposables were so much more convient. Eventually, I realized I was wasting money when I had cloth diapers sitting right there waiting to be used. So I switched to cloth diapers....FINALLY. I used some prefolds, that a friend gave to me, on Elizabeth. I LOVED them! They worked great! We didn't have fancy covers. We had the plain plastic white ones but with the prefolds they worked great. I used the prefolds, that I recived from my baby shower, on Bridget. They worked like a cloth diaper is expected too. With Bridget we had a lot of leaks. The problem was the covers. The plain plastic ones didn't fit her right and somewhere I lost the desire to cloth diaper so we went back to disposables. However, we're back to our cloth diapering journey. It's put off for now while I wait on our new diaper covers to arrive and then we're totally off the disposable diaper train. While looking up specific flatfolds for a 2 yr old I stumbled across a website name Baby Belle Bottoms. While there I came across this interesting article.

Here's a taste of what's in it:

"Babies are born with the ability to communicate when they are eliminating. Parents and caregivers have the ability to not only learn and respond to baby’s elimination cues, but can even intuitively anticipate baby’s need to go. Just as the need to nurse can become so obvious to a mother, so too can her baby’s need to poop or pee! Elimination communication (aka EC, Infant Hygiene, Infant Potty Training and Diaper Free) is a term coined by Ingrid Bauer, author of Diaper Free! Natural Infant Hygiene. She was inspired to raise her sons with minimal use of diapers after traveling to India and Africa where diapers are rarely used."

Out of curiousity I went to youtube in search of more on this "Diaper Free" idea and came across this video
*Minus the fact that she's trying to sell to your it's an informative video on what EC is

A simple youtube search will lead to various videos of mothers showing you elimanation communication works. Or you could search more of ECSimplified's (the above lady's) videos.

And no this is not an announcement that we'll now be doing EC. None-the-less I find it interesting. What do you think?

Much love in Christ <3

  1. I've heard of EC before and, frankly, I think it's rather ridiculous. Sure, babies communicate their needs from birth, but the bladder and colon muscles and nerves are not developed for quite some time...and I don't know any mother alive - except for maybe the mom of a first-born who somehow decides that her home doesn't need to be cleaned at all or other family needs met - who has time to sit and watch a newborn for "signs" of having to go. I've raised my two daughters and cared for nearly another dozen infants over the years and most of them really don't show signs of going unless they are very constipated and have pain with bowel movements. I think this another example of developmentally inappropriate (expecting too much too soon) expectations.

  2. I find it interesting. I've never heard of it until last night. But like I said, we're not EC'ers (is that a word? ha). I'm not sure this would work out to well with our country. In other countries, like Africa and India, I'm sure it works fine - actually I know it does since they use this method. But like I said this would be difficult to achieve in our fast paced country.
